Description
The expressions and contortions of the horses on a carousel bring feelings of agony and despair in this series of Carousel of Despair. Processed with a strong black and white film noir contrast.
Even as a child I would not ride a carousel, as the horses always appeared to be locked in a state of discomfort. I have ridden on a carousel as an adult with my own children only to feel disturbed and uncomfortable with all these suffering animals surrounding me.

I have always related to the carousel in this way. Your eye in capturing the despair of these fixed pieces is powerful.

Your b/w photography and perspective/composition has brought out the "dark" side of these carousel horses. A well done series, James.

This series really captures the sometimes ghoulish or freak show aspects of a carnival! Striking and beautifully shot.

I think that this series has illustrated the sometimes fearful experience of riding a carousel as a child in an excellent way!
