Description

The Gapstow Bridge gently reflects in The Pond of New York City's Central Park as the clouds above languish in the spring sunshine. Presented with beautiful black and white processing.

The beautiful, schist bridge found at 62nd street in Central Park, offering one of the best views of the New York City skyline, is known as the Gapstow Bridge. Situated at the northeast end of the Pond, this bridge was initially built in 1874 and designed by Jacob Wrey Mould. Mould's design would prove itself unable to stand against the elements, however, and his lovely but delicate wooden bridge with cast iron railings was soon replaced due to wear.
The stone replacement that stands in Central Park today was constructed in 1896, based off of the design by Howard & Caudwell. Covered with leaves and foliage in summer while being dusted with snow in winter, the Gapstow Bridge offers a moment of tranquil beauty in any season. (Information obtained from centralpark.com)

Central Park, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, is an urban park in New York City's borough of Manhattan. The park initially opened in 1857 on 778 acres of city-owned land. In 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won a design competition to improve and expand the park with a plan to the current 843 acres, which they entitled the Greensward Plan. Construction commenced that same year, continued through the American Civil War, and concluded in 1873. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States.
