Description
Large mature American Elm trees line the area of New York City's Central Park called The Mall in regal splendor.
Once referred to as an "open air hall of reception" by its creators, the Mall was specially designed to accommodate the width of carriages passing through its bounds. Around the turn of the century, these carriages would drop off their wealthy inhabitants at the Mall's starting point, where they could enjoy the natural scenery and mingle with people of lesser status. When these visitors finally reached the Bethesda Terrace, their carriages would be waiting to bring them to their next destination. (Information obtained from centralpark.com)
Central Park, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, is an urban park in New York City's borough of Manhattan. The park initially opened in 1857 on 778 acres of city-owned land. In 1858, Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux won a design competition to improve and expand the park with a plan to the current 843 acres, which they entitled the Greensward Plan. Construction commenced that same year, continued through the American Civil War, and concluded in 1873. Central Park is the most visited urban park in the United States. Reminds me of the Alley of the Oaks at Oak Alley Plantation on River Road near New Orleans. Fabulous old trees and a gorgeous shot. Wonder how they kept them alive and free from elm disease? F/L

I love this image. The trees are so stately and the bright green is spectacular against the dark bark, fence and silhouettes. l,f,p
