Description
The art deco sign for Hotel Victor stands out prominently on the corner announcing the services provided within the building in Hoboken, New Jersey
Hotel Victor was opened in 1916 by the Rivara family. Prior to becoming Hotel Victor it was formerly known as the Hudson Cafe. Victor was the Rivara’s son whom the hotel and bar were named after. The hotel was originally built to accommodate ship workers traveling from Europe to the shipyards, the rooms being small with sparse amenities. During prohibition of the 1920’s the basement was a Speak Easy (called such because you had to speak quietly and be careful whom you talked to). The archways in the basement also acted as betting windows. The Hotel Victor sign was installed in 1935 with pink neon light tubes and still stands today. Great b/w capture of the old vintage signs. When I see a good image of these signs, I always travel back to a time when they new, how things must have been then. Wonderful work! Sharing this marvelous piece!
