The Naumberg Bandshell waits patiently for the summer concert season to begin in New York City's Central Park in classic black and white.
The Naumburg Bandshell, an original feature of the Park, has come a long way from its beginnings as a mere classical music arena. It was constructed in 1862, at a time when pop music concerts were deemed unsuitable for such a venue. Today, the Bandshell is known for its summertime concerts, which include a variety of musical artists from a wide range of different genres in addition to the traditional classical. Central Park, designated a National Historic Landmark in 1962, is an urban park in New York City's borough of Manhattan. The park initially opened in 1857 on 778 acres of city-owned land.
